Colorado Springs Loses a Local Motorsports Hero

Ted FoltzThe Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb community lost a local legend this past week with the passing three-time PPIHC Champion Glenn “Ted” Foltz.  Born on March 1, 1933, Foltz passed away at the age of 81 at his home on Wednesday, September 17, 2014.

Foltz had many interests in life such as golf, bowling, and traveling but motorsports and specifically the Pikes Peak Hill Climb was his passion.  Ted began racing Pikes Peak as soon he could at the age of 21 in 1954 driving for Ray Newbill in the Open Wheel Division finishing in 11th place.  Foltz achieved his first victory on America’s Mountain in 1970 claiming the Open Wheel Division title with a time of 12:41.10 in his No.31 Chevy powered Upright Sprint Car. Ted found himself atop the podium of America’s oldest road race twice more in 1975 winning the Stock Car Division and again in 1980 reclaiming Open Wheel victory.

Ted FoltzAdding to his legacy, Foltz was the runner-up in his respected divisions six times and served two terms on the Pikes Peak Auto Hill Climb Board of Directors (1978-84, ’88-91) before retiring from 34 years of racing.  Foltz’s contributions to the Race to the Clouds extended far beyond the driver’s seat serving as the driving force in establishing the original Pikes Peak Auto Hill Climb Museum in 1989. Foltz was recognized for his achievements last October as a “Class of 2014” inductee to the Colorado Motorsports Hall of Fame.

He is survived by his wife Carol, daughters Cheri Griggs and Pam Hilbert. Grandchildren Jeremy (Molly) Griggs, Samantha (Michael) Richardson, Amanda Griggs (Chris); Scott (Jamie) Podoll, Jason (Courtney) Podoll, Kevin (Cortney) Podoll, and Tommy Hilbert.  Great-Grand Children Connor, Kendall, Emily, Morgan and Camden.  Aiden, Megan, Reece, Jackson, Danny.  Sister Connie (Joey) Wetzel, and an extended loving family.
